What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a non-invasive, hands on health care discipline that focuses on the musculoskeletal system.  Chiropractors practice a drug-free, manual approach to health care that includes patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment

At Holly Meadow Chiropractic Clinic, Dr. Best and Dr. Malowney utilize a combination of treatments, based on the individual needs of each patient.   After taking a comprehensive history and physical examination, every patient is provided a diagnosis and explanation of their problem.  The doctors then develop an individualized treatment plan that may consist of spinal adjustments, modalities, therapeutic exercises and lifestyle and nutrition advise.

What to Expect

Your first visit at Holly Meadows Chiropractic Clinic with one of the chiropractors will take approximately 60 minutes.  You will begin by filling out new patient intake forms. Next your chiropractor will conduct a detailed history focused on your particular complaint and medical history.

Next, your chiropractor will perform a physical examination with you that may include range of motion testing, orthopedic testing, neurological testing and palpation of your muscles and joints.  Your chiropractor will then provide you with a diagnosis and explanation of your particular condition, and treatment recommendations.    You will be given an opportunity to ask any questions that you have about your condition or treatment.

If you decide chiropractic care is right for you, treatment generally commences as part of your initial visit.  Occasionally, we may require further testing such as x-rays to rule out certain conditions. You will be referred to an outside facility if required.

Subsequent visits generally last about 15 minutes and your chiropractor will ask you questions and perform some tests to gauge your progress. Your treatment may be advanced or altered slightly depending on the progress you are making. More in-depth evaluations are performed as necessary.

To make an appointment with either Dr. Best or Dr. Malowney, please call our office at 728-9999 or visit our book an appointment page and you will be contacted within 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a chiropractic adjustment?
Chiropractors are highly skilled in the hands-on art of spinal adjustment.  An adjustment involves applying a specific force in a precise direction to a joint that is not moving properly.  Joints that are not moving properly can cause pain.  The purpose of the adjustment is to help restore normal motion often relieving pain.

What is the cracking sound?
Chiropractic treatment involves the manipulation of joints, with the goal of decreasing pain by improving movement and function within that joint.  When a joint is adjusted (moved), there is a natural change in the internal pressure of that joint.  The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint that results in gas bubbles being released.

Is chiropractic safe?
Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of musculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects.  Research continues to support the safety and efficacy of chiropractic treatment.  Adverse effects are very rare and your chiropractor will assess you for any risks before commencing treatment.

Do I have to have my neck adjusted?
After a thorough history and examination, your chiropractor will discuss your treatment options with you. For those patients who are uncomfortable, there are alternatives to neck adjustments that can be offered.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?
No, a patient does not need referral before visiting a doctor of chiropractic. Chiropractors are primary contact practitioners which means that patients can contact them for care directly.

What kinds of things can chiropractic help me with?
Chiropractors treat problems of the musculoskeletal system. This includes lower back pain, neck pain, headaches, disk herniations, plantar fasciitis, shoulder and elbow problems, carpal tunnel, muscle strains, sciatic pain and much more.

Once I go to the Chiropractor, do I have to go forever?
No.  At Holly Meadows Chiropractic Clinic, we emphasize getting patients better as quickly as possible, with the fewest number of visits as possible.  The number of visits appropriate for your particular health problem will be discussed with you.

What kind of education do Chiropractors have?
Chiropractors study for a minimum of three years at university and four years at chiropractic college.  We take courses in anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, biomechanics, x-rays, adjusting techniques and more.  Chiropractic students undergo an intensive and closely supervised internship program with patients prior to graduation.  In addition, chiropractors must pass rigorous National and Provincial Licensing Board examinations.
